what ?
a parterre home opening up towards the urban garden - het Funenpark - as a welcoming backyard.
Located in the architectural statement "Sporenboog", the triangular shape of the 1-floor-dwelling is formed by the bending shape of the large building - curving along the railway tracks crossing through Amsterdam.
Funenpark consists of a car-free area with a variety of apartment buildings designed by different architects, floating within the open green field.

architectural . logic
All non-load-bearing walls were torn down to allow architectural logic back into this 120m2 apartment. We re-shaped the core of the dwelling starting from the centre of the bathroom, creating symmetry and openness. Especially opening up the 13,5m long space from one side to the other allowed light to even reach the new elevated kitchen.
contrasting . materials
The use of a 2-step nude, concrete kitchen floor defines the 3 different functions: from dining to kitchen and from kitchen to living. With a little one on the way and the current WFH society we live in today, the ability to close an area was a necessity - without devouring the flow of the room. By integrating the slender sliding doors into the design of the kitchen and cabinets, the lightness of the is kept and the light within the spaces is even more playful.
Although full of contrasts, the flow is accentuated in the lines of the oak floor, the white solid surface that folds over the refined walnut kitchen with the same 2-step as the concrete floor. Finished with a recurring brass element in all forms that bring the different materials together and result in a wholesome design. The treated brass will keep its shine until the end of time, just as the goldfish orange wink on the inside of the kitchen cabinets will keep glowing.
. the core
The warmth of the orange waxed concrete bathroom on a fresh green tiled base, separated by just a little brass line adds the feistiness to the core of the house. Why not play with the darkest spot in the house?
As colourful as parts of this home are, as serene is the master bedroom. Hiding the craziness we call our wardrobe in a carefully designed walk-in closet, using every inch of the triangular space.
Last but not least, there is a little wonderland called the guest bathroom. With goldfish and flowers floating over your head, large black & white tiles - again separated with the little brass line - you feel like royal doing your personal business.
